Tudor Style Home in Washington DC's Colonial Village/Shepherd Park

Colonial Village/Shepherd Park is a residential neighborhood located at the northern point of Washington, D.C. The western section is bounded by Rock Creek. To the east is downtown Silver Spring, and along with its great schools and spacious housing, this neighborhood is one of the prime destinations of homebuyers looking to live in northwestern D.C.

West of Silver Spring

Colonial Village/Shepherd Park is bounded by Floral Street and Rock Creek to the south, Western Avenue to the west and Eastern Avenue to the east—both avenues also run along the state line and their point of connection completes the town’s jurisdiction to the north. Brightwood/Manor Park and Takoma both neighbor Colonial Village/Shepherd Park to the south, Chevy Chase to the west, Silver Spring to the northeast.

History of Integration

Following WWII the community went through a change in population. A largely Protestant community banned Jewish and African-American citizens from living in the area. It wasn’t until the 1940’s and 50’s when the community opened its arms to the city’s Jewish population. Now the community prides itself for having diverse neighbors, and although the Jewish population has fallen, there are still active synagogues around town. Ohev Sholom – The National Synagogue, is located on Jonquil Street and is the oldest synagogue in the District.

Car & the MARC

Most families in the area travel by car and it’s fairly easy to find parking on the streets. But, adjacent to the eastern section of the state line is the Silver Spring Metro station. It is the closest Maryland station to the eastern line and also straddles the MARC station. The Brunswick Line’s co-location with the metro station allows all neighboring communities easy access to Maryland, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The Silver Spring station services the red line and can easily be accessed by the Metrobus. The best routes are the S2, S4, and S9.

Spacious Community

Colonial Village/Shepherd Park is filled with a spacious and family friendly atmosphere and housing stock. Its leafy environment attracts families and most available houses here are detached homes. These homes boast a variety of looks including Colonials and Spanish style Haciendas. It’s location at the northern point of D.C. gives it a dual position between the suburbs and the nightlife of neighbor Silver Spring. This also attracts a lot of young families.

Most Head to Downtown Silver Spring for Nightlife

The neighborhoods proximity to downtown Silver Spring is an eye-catching attraction for most people moving into the area. One notable hotspot is the AFI Silver. This three-screen movie theater plays both independent and mainstream movies. The AFI Silver is also known to be the most technically advanced exhibition outlet in North America.

Before you take her to the movies, check out some great eats around the cinema. Some great spots are Mandalay Restaurant & Cafe, Cooper Canyon Grill, and Nando’s Peri-Peri. The latter is an Afro-Portuguese chain located on Ellsworth Drive and offers an amazing mango lime chicken.

The Fillmore Silver Spring is also located on the premises. This concert venue offers big-name artists and national acts in a very spacious setting with several bars and beautiful decor.

Rock Creek & a Great Elementary School

Shepherd Park Elementary is in this neighborhood and is highly spoken of. This school has likely drawn in many young families as schooling is an important factor to them. The school also occupies a beautiful soccer field, made available to the community as well. San Miguel Middle School and Coolidge High are also in the area while there are some private schools as well.

Along the northwestern region of the state line, and running south, is Rock Creek. This large urban park provides a DreamChaser fishing area as well as the most northern part of the Valley Trail.

On the eastern outskirts of Colonial Village/Shepherd Park is Jesup Blair Local Park in Montgomery County. This park features a playground, a picnic area, tennis courts, and fields for both softball and baseball. The park is also close to the Holy Cross Hospital Health Center and the Cultural Arts Center Montgomery College. This spacious arts theater centers on the performing arts and features plays, concerts, speakers and other cultural offerings. It is located off of Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.

Overall Colonial Village/Shepherd Park has a history of diversity and all of the new housing developments and great schools make this area a big draw for families of all sizes and ages. It’s quiet stability along with the nightlife essence and proximity to Silver Spring and the MARC station make it an exclusive option for homebuyers.
