Known for its very close proximity to Odenton, Gambrills is a predominantly residential area that allows great opportunities to nearby towns while being close to home. The community is also near BWI Airport and Severn River.

East of Odenton

Gambrills is roughly bounded by I-97 to the east, Burns Crossing Road and the Patuxent Freeway to the west, the freeway’s intersection with I-97 creates the town’s most southern point, while the community’s most northern point is at the intersection of New Cut Road and I-97. Severn borders the community to the north, Odenton to the west, Millersville to the south and Pasadena to the east. Areas like Fort Meade, Glen Burnie and Crownsville are also nearby.

Home of the Historic Rosehill

The area of Gambrills is named for Augustine Gambrill, a plantation owner. The area is also home to Rosehill; a historic home and property listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property consists of 17 acres of partially wooded and cleared lands on which are located a dwelling and six outbuildings. The dwelling displays a complex construction evolution originating from a mid-18th-century frame. This is believed to be the first documented example of this form in the Chesapeake Bay region. The six outbuildings include a frame corn house, tobacco barn, a log outbuilding, a late-19th-century stable and a pump house.

Traveling Around the Area

The original village of Gambrills is located along Route 175, or Annapolis Road, southeast of the center of Odenton. This route will take you past Odenton, Fort Meade, Jessup and eventually into Columbia. The Patuxent Freeway, or Route 32, is another major east-west route in Gambrills. This route will take you as far as Eldersburg if you travel north. If you drive southbound, this route will eventually merge with I-97 where it terminates in Annapolis. I-97 can also take you northbound and into downtown Baltimore. Gambrills is served by MARC, the Maryland commuter rail service. There is a busy MARC station in the neighboring town of Odenton, with regular rail service to Baltimore and Washington, DC available. Baltimore-Washington International Airport is also a short drive away via I-97.

Housing Stock

One of the best things about Gambrills is that it provides relatively affordable housing for being so close to major areas like Odenton and Severn. Gambrills’ housing stock mostly consists of single-family detached homes. Although there are some townhouses and apartment buildings scarcely spattered around town, the majority of housing is available through serene, wooded settings. Some of the more popular styles that can be found here include contemporaries, colonials, cape cods and ramblers.

Travel to Nearby Odenton for Nightlife

Since the area is mostly residential, there are very little choices for shopping, dining and entertainment. However, the area’s location allows residents to drive within close range to some major towns for a plethora of diverse choices when it comes to restaurants and entertainment.

If you travel southbound on Route 3, you will end up in southern Odenton where you can find reliable shopping destinations like Waugh Chapel Towne Centre and The Village at Waugh Chapel. Both of these shopping centers are nearly one, as they comprise many establishments, restaurants and a Regal Cinema. Here you can find Wegmans, Safeway, Target, DICK’s Sporting Goods, and HomeGoods among other things. A great restaurant found at this location is Fuji Hibachi Sushi & Lava Bar. This modern Japanese hub features some classic Japanese dishes that include teppanyaki, and some creative sushi rolls all available along with an extensive martini menu. Other terrific restaurants in the area are not limited to Nando’s Peri-Peri, The Green Turtle, Newk’s, and Genghis Grill—a colorful chain with a large variety of ingredients for build-your-own Mongolian stir-fry bowls.

Odenton Shopping Center is a shopping mall located near the north end of Odenton. This supermarket chain comes with departments for meats, produce, deli, bakery and this includes all natural and organic items. The area doesn’t have as many choices compared to the aforementioned shopping centers, but is a lot closer to home. Some fabulous restaurants found here are Hunan L’Rose, Three Brothers Italian Restaurant and Rinconcito Mexicano.  

Some Nearby Green Spaces

Within the community is Severn Run National Environment Area. Located along Severn Run, this remote park features hiking trails, fishing spots and plenty of other activities. The Patuxent Research Refuge is also nearby Gambrills, located south of Fort Meade. This 12,800-acre wildlife refuge allows Biologists to study many types of species and is the only National Wildlife Refuge in the United States established to support wildlife research.

Other green spaces located around Gambrills include Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Chartwell Country Club, Odenton Park Recreation Area and Walden Country Club which is across the street from Waugh Chapel and The Village at Waugh Chapel. Some schools serving the community are not limited to Arundel high and middle school, South River high and School of the Incarnation.

Gambrills is remotely situated near Odenton and thus allows easy access for residents to travel to its neighboring town for entertainment and dining options. The area is also surrounded by some green space and is a short drive to Severn River and Glen Burnie.
